  1585 Mainland, Hyde County
urn the pages back to 1585 when adventuresome Europeans landed on mainland Hyde County near Wysocking Bay and discovered an Algonkian Indian village named “Pomeiooc”.  Expedition artist John White portrayed Pomeiocc as a settlement encircled by stakes located somewhere between what is now Middletown and the great lake the Indians called “Paquippe”.   Although many Indian artifacts have been found in the vicinity, archaeologists have yet to unearth Pomeiocc.  Paquippe, or Lake Mattamuskeet as it is now known, was then as now a haven for wild birds and fish.
