f you like to wander, Hyde County is the place to wander, wonder, and unwind.  Drive the Mainland roads and get acquainted with the beautiful architecture of the Lake Landing Rural Historic Districts (link) and the Fairfield community.  Explore the county seat of Swan Quarter and step inside The Church Moved by the Hand of God (link).  Be sure to see the magnificent Mattamuskeet Lodge, a world reknown hunting lodge from days gone by and former pump station used to drain and farm portions of Lake Mattamuskeet in the early twentieth century (link).  Marvel at the Octagon House (link), watch commercial fishing boats unload their catch in Engelhard, and witness the growth of groceries in the grain and vegetable farms that stretch across the county.   

Relax on the Swan Quarter to Ocracoke ferry as you pass pristine marshes and rafts of water birds. Pedal along Ocracoke’s Silver Lake and enjoy the sights and sounds of an authentic fishing village.  Stroll down Howard Street in the shade of centuries old live oaks and red cedars.  Be immersed in Ocracoke history with a tour of the Ocracoke Preservation District.  Browse the village shops and galleries tucked among fish houses and islander homes of yesteryear.  And then reward yourself with a signature softshell crab sandwich at one of the many island eateries.
