Hyde County encompasses approximately 600 square miles, including all of the Mainland and Ocracoke Island. Because there are no incorporated towns in Hyde County, there are no Police Departments. The Hyde County Sheriff’s Office has the responsibility to cover this large area, with the assistance of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the North Carolina Marine Patrol, the North Carolina Wildlife Commission and the National Park Service on Ocracoke Island.
Other duties include the Emergency 911 service, dispatching fire and rescue on both the Mainland and Ocracoke Island. One of the programsthat the Sheriff's Office offers is Touch Line. This program is for the citizens in the county. Every morning and evening, the dispatchers call a list of senior citizens to check on them. Most of these residents live alone and sometimes they have medical problems. County residents interested in participating in the Touch Line program should contact Barbara Deese in our office.
In order to fight the war on DRUGS, we ask that everyone in the community keep us informed of what is happening within their community. If you sould learn of something that doesn't seem right, please call and talk to Sheriff Mason or one of the Deputies. You do not have to give your name. All information will be kept confidential. With only five Deputies working the Mainland and three working on Ocracoke, th drug delaers know who the Deputies are, and often, where they are. Hyde County Sheriff's Office needs your eyes and ears in the community to help them win the fight against drugs and the problems they causein our county.
The duties of the deputies consist of serving civil and criminal papers, transporting inmates, transporting mental and substance abuse citizens, serving as bailiff for all courts held in Hyde County, investigating criminal and drug related incidents and working some traffic problems.
If you have any questions, please call or come by and visit us. The Hyde County Sheriff’s Office door is always open. There is someone in the office 24-hours per day, 7 days per week.
